For the past 80 years or so the Autodromo Nazionale Monza has been the
stage for real motor racing......the buildings and the banking ooze history
and drama.....the high speeds and claustrophobia of the parkland circuit
are not for the faint of heart, so it was no surprise that the 2008 LMS race
would be a show to remember.
And so it proved, from the flying circuses of Dindo, JCW and Stephane, to
the wheel to wheel battle (literally!) of Peugeot and Audi there was never a
dull moment. The action was full on and the 1000 kilometres target was hit
in under five hours..........even John Hindhaugh struggled to keep pace in
the new Radio Le Mans show.........a welcome addition to the scene.
Thankfully the strength of the modern era chassis protected the drivers
from really serious injury. Ortelli may be back for Le Mans and JCW will
have to wear a corset for a few months, I'll leave the Creation boys space
to be rude about that...........it could all have been much, much worse.
I saw Daniel Poissenot at dinner on the Sunday after the race, he had the
look of a man who has dodged a bullet. Napoleon Bonaparte once said
"Give me lucky generals," Daniel would appear to fall in that
category...........long may it continue.
