Heat and Dust |
The 2006 edition of the Sebring 12 Hours was significant for several things ...... Audi's diesel powered victory being the most obvious but there was also the confirmation that Audi is the premier endurance racing brand in the world ...... a crown held for many years by Porsche but the long layoff from top line competition since 1998 has taken its toll. Excellence was Expected indeed, if the will is there then Porsche can regain their Mojo but Audi will not throw away their position at the top of the heap so lightly. As to the ALMS, it declares feel the quality, forget the width....well yes, but no, but yes ......... simply put, it needs more cars ........ Aston Martin disappearing till later in the year is a major blow leaving Corvette without a real challenge ....... how long will that state of affairs be allowed to go on in the financially challenged world of General Motors? On the positive side of the ledger the anticipated Champion, Dyson and Penske battle will be at full tilt and GT2 can always be relied on for a grand scrap. Will it be enough to carry things forward till the long promised wave of new recruits arrives .......... it depends who you ask. However Sebring will always be Sebring with a passionate crowd who appreciate the fare laid out in front of them .......... they at least can be relied upon to turn out en masse .......... SCP is fortunate to have the top lensman out there, Rick Dole, to give his personal vision of events. |
